Sunday 8th July
Today was “bush bashing day”.
This was the opportunity for Bob to test out the Ford Ranger vehicle
without the caravan attached and sample some really good unsealed dirt roads.
Along the way we stopped to view some magnificent scenes from
designated lookouts, as well as find some of those out of the way National Park
camping spots for future reference. Upon Stokes Hill Lookout was a three
dimensional relief made in some kind of metal, displaying Wilpena Pound and it
was interesting to see the size of it - I
imagined I was hovering over it in a balloon.
One particular place we visited was named The Sacred Canyon, and
here we saw some ancient rock carvings before climbing over rocks to reach what
would have been a rock shelter for the Aborigines.
In places we could see that during a wet
period a waterfall would cascade from above.
Just beside the road Bob spotted a wedge-tailed eagle standing
very still and letting those beady eyes focus on something – not sure what, but
my camera was able to focus on it long enough to get this picture.
At
the end of this day I lit a lovely fire in one of the designated fire pits
scattered amongst the campground.
Blissfully I sat and wallowed in the flicker, warmth and glow while
periodically prodding it to produce more of those lovely yellow dancing flames –
yes a closet pyromaniac here.
